This class we are learning to understand the concept of
“convergence” and what that entails. In
our book by Henry Jenkins, he states that it is the “flow of content across
multiple media platforms, the cooperation between multiple media industries,
and the migratory behavior of media audiences who will go almost anywhere in
search of the kinds of entertainment experiences they want.” There are so many examples of this concept
which give light to why it is so important to understand.
Evidence that it is happening can be established by the
observation of the Blockbuster stores shutting down. The video rental
establishment was not able to compete with the new RedBox’s that have been popping up all
over the place. They now have changed
their ways to offer a similar service to that of Netflix, which delivers DVDs
to their registered members.
The demand for actual physical DVDs has decreased especially
because of the surge of the internet.
People are more easily able to get access to and watch their movies and
video content online nowadays.
My favorite example of convergence is that movies have been
turning into videogames, and vice versa.
Popular movies such as The Lord of
the Rings and Harry Potter, have
been perfect examples of this. An
example of a videogame being transformed into a movie could be Silent Hill. There are so many instances where convergence
is taking place. Consumers are becoming
empowered to give their opinions back to companies in order to get the type of
media they want to be produced. This is
a big deal, and I’m excited to see how it will take place more and more in the
future!
